How Free Should Your Online Speech Be?

The Supreme Court heard a case this term regarding threats made on Facebook :

Should online threats be punished or do we need at least one bastion of truly free speech? (should punhisment only occur when the speech is translated into action or is delivered in person in a threatening manner?)

Should you be eligible for school disciplinary consequences for content you post online from home?  Should teachers be accountable to schools for content they post?

things shouldnt be taken seriously unless they are confirmed to be 100% true. online threats shouldnt be punished because almost nothing on the internet is real

Online speech is the way of the future. Threats made online have been carried through just as often as threats made face to face. Any violent words or promised actions should never be ignored nor underestimated. If making a threat verbally is barred from being protected under the First Amendment Free Speech Clause, then so should online threats.

I think people that truly intent to hurt someone should be punished, but more than half of the speech online should not be taken seriously. Teachers should not be accountable for what the students say, teachers are there to teach subjects, not to be blamed for what the students think.

I believe that the speech on the internet is the modern free speech. Everything we say is just digitized but nevertheless; still words. We often take our freedoms for granted and often abuse it in a manner that is completely irresponsible. What a majority of freedom advocates can't seem to understand is that freedom is not freedom without consequence.

If the student posts something threatening online towards another student and their only connection is through the school, I believe that the school has an incentive to intervene and confront the situation in an appropriate manner. However, teachers should NOT be held accountable what the student posts unless it was directly influenced by the teachers themselves.

I feel like the only reason an online threat from a student should only be taken into consideration if it jeopardizes the safety of the school and its inhabitants. I also don't think that teachers should be held accountable for the online actions of their students, unless the threats were strongly encouraged by the teachers.

Online speech is the same as any other form of speech and should be treated as such. If a person makes a threat online, it has the same impact as if the person said it in person.

online threats and in person threats should be held on the same level of severity and and punishable as such. just because you CAN say something doesn't mean you SHOULD say it.

I think that is someone posts something online that is a threat to themselves or anyone around them, then they should be talked to either by the school or their parents. It could save someones life because then the teachers can help them if they are depressed and show it online. Alot of people write their feelings online like on twitter and people should look into some kids accounts.

I think that online threats and in person threats should be punished equally. If a threat made outside of school in person would be punished by the school then so should the online threat. However, teachers should not be held accountable for what they post.

A threat is a threat, no matter how it was said. Whether it be online or in person, a person should never feel threatened by another individual. I believe that the person threatening should always receive some type of punishment.

An online threat should carry the same weight as one done in person. A teacher should not be blamed, because it was the student's poor decision.

Online threats should be punished. It is one thing to have freedom of speech, but something that threatens someone crosses the line. I think students should be eligible for consequences at school for what they post online, if it directly has an impact on a problem that is already going on at school. Teacher's should be accountable because this is their job and they have a certain reputation to uphold of looking professional even outside the work place.
