The Olympics is a large event, and hosting a large event is a lot of work. You need to be financially/economically stable and be reliable enough for the Olympic competitors to feel safe during their visit. I think that maybe additional police/ security should be brought in to protect the event and the people in it.
26% of the population being below the poverty line does not mean that Brazil as a whole is poor. They've built the stadium. It would cost more money to take it down and make another place build a stadium. The Olympics is a huge event enjoyed by the world. Brazil will be getting a lot of tourism which means a lot of money. They can use that money to fix poverty if they so choose. We still have two more years; maybe some of Brazil's problems will be fixed by then.
I agree with Christina, I think they should have more police to ensure the safety of the competitors, but since it is such a large event I'm sure they will have plenty of security.
the money generated from the Olympics can be used to help poverty in Brazil, tourism and Olympic events generate a lot of money that can only benefit the country. The olympics are still 2 years away however and you dont know what issues will be resolved, or arise in that time.
If the location of that year is really dangerous I'm sure they must have plans to up the security based upon the area. It might help out their country a lot if they plan on holding the Olympics there even after they've already built the stadium. I find that they need to keep a watchful eye out.

26 percent is a significant number but most places in the world has some sort of a percentage for poverty. Yes, im sure that Brazil needs to work on improving domestic issues instead of international sports, but maybe this could benefit them somehow. People from all over the world will see the mess embedded in Brazil and some with act upon to help fix it. Also the more people are aware, the more that can be done through those who are aware.
There have been accusations that both the Olympic Committee and the FIFA committee are corrupt when it comes to the selection of the host nation. While the world cup stadium was being built there, several workers died on the job, many went weeks with out receiving pay, and they were almost late in completing construction. The amount of facilities that need to be built to host a summer Olympics are even bigger. First you need to build the main arena where the opening ceremonies and track & field events would take place, swimming facilities, a man-made rapids river thing for kayaking, indoor bicycling arena, gymnastics facilities, a rugby field, and countless other facilities for events and spectators. Luckily they have soccer/football stadiums already built.
Brazil views the Olympics as an economic revival, or so they should. Without a worldwide interest in their economy, it faces the increasing numbers for the issues of poverty and police brutality. With an economic boost from heightened tourism, they should be able to reform and fix issues within their society. Do I agree with this, no. From a theoretical stand point though, I could see why Brazil wants the Olympics. Do I think the Olympics are actually going to help them... if the world cup was any indication of how the Olympics are going to go, then no.
I don't think that they should take down the stadium or anything. It's way too late for that. I just wonder if maybe they should have thought it through a little more before starting in the first place.
I think it's a very bad idea to have the Olympics in Brazil because it will make the citizens more and more discontent with the government. They had many protest during the Soccer World Cup this year and it already showed that Brazil has bigger problems and they should concentrate on that
I actually think it is a good thing to host the next Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. The Olympics would bring in a lot of tourists as well as a huge cash flow, which is probably what the country needs to stimulate the economy and hopefully help the people below the poverty lines. Hosting the next Olympics also would give a lot of people employment as facilities need to be built, and workers need to be available during the games. It also may bring more tourists for later because the host country is always highlighted during the Olympics. But, I do feel the athletes should be under protection due to the high rates of crime and deaths.
