Three Afghan National Army soldiers, who were training in Massachusetts, have gone missing after taking a trip to a nearby mall. "The three soldiers do not appear to pose any threat to the public", said the Massachusetts National Guard. The three men currently missing in Massachusetts are Afghanistan National Army Soldiers Maj. Jan Mohammad Arash, Cpt. Mohammad Nasir Askarzada, and Cpt. Noorullah Aminyar. The three soldiers were reported missing late Saturday.
Do you think these soldiers pose a threat?
should these soldiers be able to leave the base like that unsupervised?
I would say that they can post a threat, but simply because they are soldiers instead of regular citizens. But i don' think we can say that they do for sure, otherwise we'd be making a lot of assumptions with no substantial evidence that they are a threat. Like Sami said, this is only on the news because they're Afghani.
According to the article, the first time that this had happened, it turned out that the soldiers had just wanted to stay in the U.S. If they had wanted to cause trouble, they would have probably already carried out their wanted actions, but even the Massachusetts National Guard had stated that they weren't a threat. They probably just wanted to do more sightseeing, or stay in the U.S. like they themselves have said. I agree with Amy and Sami; the whole threat thing is just because the soldiers are Afghani.
I believe that everyone should be a little nervous about them being missing. They could have planed all of this and something very bad could be coming but at the same time they could just want to stay in the states.
Unsupervised soldiers from a different country and society, going to an American mall. Not even an American guide to help them or keep an eye on them? There are a few possible answers as to why they have gone missing:
1. They are lost. We live in a very different environment than the one over in Afghanistan. Roads, buildings, cars... it's another society of people. They could be wandering around completely lost in the city for all we know, however, this is very unlikely in my opinion. Even if they were lost, why wouldn't they approach someone and ask to use a phone. There are plenty of methods and scenarios they could have used to get back to the base.
2. They were kidnapped/ killed. Another very unlikely scenario where these men are trained soldiers who know how to fight back. They are trained to defend their lives.
3. They ditched the whole army scene and are hiding in America. It could be that these soldiers used the army to leave their country and find a new one. They wanted a fresh start or better life somewhere else. Or, these soldiers are working as terrorists of some sort-working to target American citizens. That last part seems harsh, but I see it as a very real possibility. There is always a possibility of immigrants being terrorists.
There are several other scenarios that could have possibly taken place, but one thing is for certain. This incident was completely preventable. In my opinion, there was no reason not to have an American along with them just to make sure they were alright. There is always a threat when we invite international troops over into our country. Troops of this nature should not leave unsupervised.
These are national army soldiers. I find that they oppose no threat to anyone or anything. I believe they should but if they don't schedule back at a strict and specific time, consequences should be made. I do not understand why Afghan was added into their missing persons report for anything other than identification.
These are Afghan National Soldiers, the ones that fight Terrorists with the US in Afghanistan. They have seen the horrors of the Taliban first hand, they probably just wanted to never return to Afghanistan.
I agree with Sami that because they were Afghan soliders, this is news. While if it were a different race , it probably wouldn't be a big deal. I think their disappearance should be investigated and hopefully the answer is found.
