Australia admits holding 153 Sri Lankan asylum seekers at sea

The Australian government has admitted it has 153 people, including children, in custody at sea while it fights a High Court challenge to any plans to send them back to Sri Lanka.

Should they be holding them or should they be allowed to leave during this time?

I would have like the Australian grant them asylum, but I guess that is not an option for the Australians. They have no reason to detain these people, they pose little threat to the Australia.

I agree with Sami, if the Australian government won't grant them asylum, then they really don't have a valid reason for keeping these people detained.

I believe it is the principle they are trying to uphold: don't come here illegally and accpect open arms. They are holding their ground on this one, regardless of whether it is moral or not. It's sad, however, granting asylum to these refugees would only make it okay for more to come. It's a thin line that the U.S. also continues to walk. We must choose between saving these children and women from their countries and maintaining strict borders. I f they are holding them return, I think that is bad. Don't stop them from entering your country and hold them off your coast. Let them move on.
