Four french journalist were held captive in Syria since last June. They were working on assignment and when they crossed the Turkey border they went missing.
Do you think its worth sending journalist on these missions in dangerous countries after all the past kidnappings and hostages? Should they be banned? Is there any precautions that can be made for these daring journalist?
I feel like people's curiosity gets the best of them and that they will always want to know what's going on in other countries. That's probably why this kind of journalism exists today.
I don't think that the media journalists should have entered into such an unstable environment. Being in such countries is a danger threat and they should seriously consider waiting until the flames die down to stick their noses in their business. I understand that news is a demand and business, however it should be banned and made public of the dangers of wandering into these territories.
It is the journalists choice to go on these missions and they should know the risk so they should not be banned. They should be told all the risks but after that it is their choice.
I feel like there will always be people wanting to know what on the other side of the fence, and there will always be people wanting to find out whats behind the fence so they can share their knowledge with others, and that's not necassarily a bad thing. This kind of journalism won't stop, I think, so the best thing we can do is to make sure the journalists are aware of what situation they are putting themselves into, and any safety measures for certain situations.
Journalists are important because they inform the public on issues going on around the world. This should be done, but they should take caution. Traveling somewhere to report should not be mandatory and if they do decide to travel, should know what could happen to them and should be educated and warned. It is their choice to go or not.
I think that no matter what this is going to happen. A dangerous job is still a job and if someone quits or is fired someone else will be willing to do it. Knowing what is going on around the world is important and should be reported on.
I think it is worth it to send journalists into dangerous area because we need our own people reporting, so we have a second opinion. I do think we should take precautions like teaching the journalists how to fight and give them weapons training and self defense.
I think it is important to send journalists into other areas because then we can know whats going on in those countries and possibly help the people there if they are in need of help. However i do think that if they are being sent to a dangerous area they should have some sort of security personnel going with them.
Although I understand the curiosity and why people feel the need to send journalists on dangerous trips, if the country is truly that unstable then there should be no question about halting the trip until safer times. Although it is important to find out about other countries and their current situations, the safety of our citizens should always be a priority. If prior knowledge about a country's instability is released to the public, I believe that there would be a lot of concerns and protest about sending journalists over there.
I think the journalists know the situation that they are going to report, so it is their own choice. Some precautions is probably know the situation that is happening before going.
these journalists know what they are signing up for, threrfore they should expect anything whether it be kidnapping or the ending of their life. they shouldnt ban these trips because how else would the poverty and corrupt governments of 3rd world countrys be exposed.
I don't think it should be allowed to be sent on missions into unstable areas its highly dangerous and its pointless to keep sending journalists if they are just going to be kidnapped.
This is a very good thing to hear. I am relieved that these hostaged journalists were freed and the fact that they were able to come unharmed is amazing. However, I still feel that journalists should be in dangerous areas because of the fact that these events need documentation so that history will not be false and so that wrong people do not get blamed for things they don't deserve.
The journalists know what they signed up for and knew they were putting their lives in danger, it is just unfortunate that journalists have to be scared just to report the news to the USA.
I dont think they should have gone in there at all knowing everything that has been going on so no i dont think we should send more journalists if we know their just going to get kidnapped and go missing.
With all the previous kidnappings that have happened journalists should be aware of what could happen to them on these type of trips. I don't think they should be banned because then it would make them want to go even more. When it comes to precautions they probably shouldn't be crossing any borders. Maybe they should bring a body guard and a tour guide with them.
I think that the journalists keep going to these areas for the super exciting stories. They know what they're getting themselves into and, they're willing to the risks for the story. That's what they do they are journalists. It's not like anyone is forcing them to go cover stories in Syria.
