Vigils are planned Wednesday across the nation to remember slain teen Trayvon Martin on the two-year anniversary of his death. Rallies in major cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, will honor Martin. Participants are being asked to wear hooded sweatshirts and hold signs.Theyll also collect signatures for a petition asking state legislators to abolish Stand Your Ground, a law in Florida that gives individuals the right to use deadly force when they believe their lives are in immediate danger. Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman was acquitted last July in the shooting death of Martin on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman claimed he shot the 17-year-old in self-defense after he came across Martin.
This law is kind of hard to choose a side, I think you should be able tp stand your ground but in the other hand a lot of people can and will abuse this law of the time comes up.
i think this law should be abolished because people could abuse the law and just shoot someone they dont like then make up something and say they were in fear for their life, thats just my opinion
I don't think the stand your ground law should be abolished but I think that the courts should be more strict on the law and set up guide lines so that people can't use this law as a way to get away with murder.
I do believe people should have the right to stand their ground but a lot of people use this law as an excuse or a cover up. I think the law is too vague and if it isn't abolished, it should at least be amended and specified.
I believe that this law is a good idea in theory. However, it is easily abused and used to help make people feel better about the decision they made to shoot at someone, and often these crimes are not even done in self defense. I don't think that the law needs to be abolished, but I do think that it should be catered to specific incidents.
I think that the law is too easily abused or taken advantage of so it should be abolished but they should have a better similar law that can not be manipulated as easy
It should be. This kind of law clearly shows how "backward" the South is. Plus, this kind of law promotes racial stereotypes against black people as violent people.
The stand your ground law should definitely be abolished it is too easily manipulated and shooting to kill when you feel "threatened" is not an okay way to go about things
I do not think that the stand your ground law should be abolished. I believe that people have the right to stand their ground, however, I think that people abuse this law and use it to justify the things they do and that is not right in any way.
I personally don't think that the stand your ground law should be abolished, however it does need to be reformed. This law keeps people safe but can be taken advantage of fairly easily and use it as an excuse to kill. I think the judges and juries on these cases need to look at all the information and decide if they were really in danger and make a decision based on their findings. In order for this law to be just there must be changes to address this problem.
Yes i feel that it should be abolished because many people can take advantage of this law and cause more harm to others even if they aren't truly in danger. This law has been proven to be a problem in multiple cases of adults shooting innocent teens just because they felt their lives were "in danger" when in fact they were exaggerating the situation.
I think this law should stay a law. People say that they should take this law away because people abuse this power. this is currently a problem, and I think the solution, or at least a whack at fixing this problem, would be to make stricter guidelines as to when this law would apply to your situation. For example, if a man was robbing a bank and already killed someone, then its probrably a good to go to shoot the man becuase your life is obliviously in danger. Although, if teens decide to turn up the music in their truck at a gas station, then you should probrably leave your gun in the glove box. just saying.
I feel that it should be abolished because it is abused and overly used by people in the court of law. I think that if they cause harm to another individual, they should be punished regardless. Of course, their punishment should be according to the details of the case and based on whether or not it was self-defense or on purpose. This is just how we have 1st degree and 2nd degree. If it was an accident or not they will be punished, but the degree may vary according to the circumstance. So yes, i do believe they should abolish this corrupt law.
I believe this law should be abolished because even though it has the right intentions in mind, it is not a very well thought out plan which is ridiculous to think that laws of this sort exists. How could the government not realize that people would use this law simply as an excuse to injure someone. Anyone could have seen this coming with the way this law is issued. However if they change up the law a little and revise it I believe that they could possibly make it work, if they have any sense.
