Former Rwandan Intelligence Chief Goes on Trial for 1994 Genocide - Radio Flyers

A French court opened a 1994 genocide trial against a former Rwandan intelligence chief Pascal Simbikangwa who fled Rwanda after the slaughter.

The ethnic genocide killed 800,000 people, mostly ethnic Tutsis, in just 100 days. If convicted, Mr. Simbikangwa could face a life sentence. Everything about the trial is exceptional: It is expected to last seven weeks, and judges are scheduled to hear from 53 witnesses.

Do you think it is fair for Mr. Simbikangwa to be convicted of the genocide that happened in 1994?

Individual Response by Timothy Ingle 2/5/14:

Do I think it is fair for Mr. Simbabawee to be convicted of the ethnic genocide that killed 800,000 people that happened in 1994? Yeah, I kinda do.

Just because it's been a few years doesn't mean it's alright. If someone caused a murder, runs away from the scene, and is found years later, that doesn't mean he didn't cause the crime. He should still do the time.

Mr. Simbikangwa should be tried and convicted of his crimes. A genocide of such massive size cannot be swept under the rug and ignored.

I do think he deserves to be convicted because he committed mass murder. It shouldn't matter if it was 20 years ago he still did it. The families of those who died deserve justice for what happened.

I think it is fair for him to be convicted. Just because it happened a while ago doesn't mean it didn't happen. He killed thousands of people and deserves to be punished.

The time period in which the crime was made and the trial for that crime shouldn't matter. Just because this happened in 1994, does not make the individual any more innocent.

Mr. Simbikangwa should be convicted of genocide. It is a crime against humanity and therefore, should not be tolerated.

It does not matter when the crime happen, he should serve the punishment for his crimes. Especially after running away and hiding.

I think that it is fair for Mr. Simbikangwa to be convicted. Even though this happened about 20 years ago there is no excuse in ignoring a mass murder. This should not be tolerated and it is still a crime no matter how much time has passed.

I think that it is fair for him to be convicted even though the crime was a while ago because he still committed the crime and is still guilty for his actions.  Genocide is really bad!!!

Yes. If he wasn't punished then he should be punished now. If someone stole 100 dollars from me 20 years ago I would still feel justified to get 100 back (110 if you include inflation).
