So I took the "Which 80s Movie Are You" quiz on Facebook [DISCLAIMER: WHERE NO CURRENT STUDENTS ARE MY FRIENDS, LAST NIGHT, ON MY OWN TIME AND MY OWN COMPUTER :) ], as did several of my other friends (I got The Princess Bride - inconceivable! i can't believe it wasn't The Breakfast Club, although TPB is a first-rate film), which sparked a whole conversation between Mrs. Wolf and myself about 80s movie heroes and heroines, which ultimately led me to find this article on the Washington Post about Lloyd Dobler, the hero, or at least protagonist, of an 80s movie called Say Anything that most of you probably haven't seen but everyone my age has :) .  Even if you're not familiar with the film as a whole, you may know the iconic scene where John Cusack, who plays Lloyd Dobler, is holding a boom box blasting Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" outside the window of his beloved, Diane Court (hmmm...whatever happened to Ione Skye, anyway).

The article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/13/AR2006021302411.html - read it, it's hilarious) postulated that certain movie characters end up defining love for a generation of their teen viewers...or at least become an immediate cultural reference point for anyone who was within a certain age range when the film came out.  Which is certainly true - ask any girl teacher my age who Jake Ryan, John Bender, Jeff Spicoli, or Lloyd Dobler is, who Patrick Dempsey was LONG before his star turn as McDreamy, or where Molly Ringwald got her "Pretty in Pink" prom dress, and if they can't answer, they're either lying about their age or they were living under a rock in the 80s :)

Which leads me to ask, what are the films for YOU guys?  What movies of your junior high/HS days will define love for your generation and/or be the ones you talk about fifteen years from now? Who will be YOUR cultural reference points?  Superbad? Twilight? Gossip Girls?  Something I haven't even heard of because my odds of getting to a non-animated film are about the same as winning the lottery?

Thoughts, anyone?

Superbad is definitely the American Pie of our time, though it's more reflective of the high school life, sadly. I still have it memorized though... :)

Say Anything will always be my favorite 80's 'romantic comedy.'
PS I love the quote as the topic name :]


But I think that movies like The Break Up will be around for a long time because they're so relatable to the female audience(really, it's all about feeling underappreciated). And sadly movies like Twilight and The Notebook will probably be around for a longggg time because they're the preverbial 'knight in shining armor-2000s style'
The girls who are just DYINGGGG to find their Noah or their Edward need a serious slap upside the head because they'll NEVER find him.
But I guess that's why movies like Pretty in Pink and Say Anything have survived and been so popular for so long.

i cant really answer this question because im not really "with " the times and dont know much about today's pop culture. but fast times, can't buy me love, and wierd science are some of the best movies ever. john cusack was also really good in one crazy summer. oh then of course we cant forget about north shore... NOBODY listens to turtle...

Well that's what I mean. Women look for Noahs and Edwards, but don't realize that they can't find replicas of them. Many guys have some of the same qualities as said 'knights,' and that's what makes them so awesome. But girls are almost brainwashed into feeling like they HAVE to have HIM, exactly as the movie character portrays him to be, and that's not fair to the good guys out there. They're tooooo narrow-minded

My favorite 80's movies are The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink was ok but I didn't like the ending.
Our movies that everybody will remember are probably going to be; Titanic (even though we were quite young when it came out), The Notebook, Twilight, A Walk to Remember, any movie Judd Apatow worked on (for guys at least), and there are a lot more I can't think of. I do think 80 movies are the best though.

i like the whole set of those movies made by the people who made superbad. i think forgetting sarah marshall and role models are my favorite though. HOwever, my favorite movie is and most likely always will be the usual suspects. No director can ever make a movie with that type of ending ever again.

I saw 'Sixteen Candels' and thought it was totally unrealistic and cheesy.  I mean Jake Ryan only started to notice Sam after he read the note that was supposed to be passed along to someone else.  (and if you've seen the movie- you know what the note said) I found him to be shallow.  But I do like Back to the Future with Michael J. Fox, Gonnies, ET, the Indiana Jones movies (except for temple of doom), and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I honestly watch Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. It's part of my life on Monday nights. Can't miss it. I'm addicted, and have to know what happens. Sadly. OOH and cant forget american idol. love it. my mom and i are hooked. haha. its just catchy. i love simons reaction to the horrible singers. its the best.
