-2 Afghans are condemned to death while 4 others are in jail for mistranslating the Qu'ran. "They're accused of modifying the Quran and their fate could be decided Sunday in court." "

-"Many clerics rejected the translated book because it did not include the original Arabic verses alongside the translation. It's a particularly sensitive detail for Muslims, who regard the Arabic Quran as words given directly by God. A translation is not considered a Quran itself, and a mistranslation could warp God's word."
-The clerics said Zalmai was trying to anoint himself as a prophet by trying to replace the Qu'ran instead of simply translating it with Arabic verses.
-Zalmai is accused of violating Islamic Shariah law by modifying the Quran. The courts in Afghanistan, an Islamic state, are empowered to apply Shariah law when there are no applicable existing statutes.
-The prosecutor wants the death penalty for Zalmai and the cleric, who have now spent more than a year in prison.



Is this one of the most ridiculous things you ever heard of? Is this taking your religion too far? Being killed for translating a book without including Arabic verses is his crime.

I believe this holds some water to it but not enough to constitute a crime. Since they consider arabic the language god wrote his word in then it only makes sence that they would get mad at a mistranslation when converted. The only realistic action is to just deny it any production until it is correctly translated. The punishment does not fit the crime and that is where I disagree.

I understand that the Qur'an is very important to Muslims, so I can understand why some people may not consider a translation of the Qur'an as a translation without the original text alongside it. However, I DO NOT think that the translators should face the death penalty over something very trivial like this. At most, they should probably pay some kind of fine (just to make the clerics happy) and publish the translation the way that would appease the clerics.

I think it all depends on his intentions when he translated the words of the Quran. If he was intending to change them, then that is very wrong. But if he was just translating it and didn't use Arabic words then it's not as big of a deal. Either way, the death penalty would be going too far. No one knows what his intentions were, so the punishment is not justified.
