Pointing to "an increased level" of gangland violence raging along parts of the border and deep into Mexico, the U.S. State Department issued a new warning for American travelers to take extra precautions in the country.
Of particular concern is Cuidad Juarez where more than 1,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence so far this year. The U.S. warning also noted that 1,600 vehicles were stolen in Juarez last July alone. Underworld violence has killed more than 5,000 people since President Felipe Calderon ordered the army and federal police to crack down on the country's powerful drug cartels. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/6058663.html
Would you feel safe traveling to Mexico? or is this a smaller problem than it's made out to be?
I don't think people who were killed in drug-related voilence were tourists. So I would feel safe traveling to Mexico. But if somebody stole my car when I was out in the store buying something that would be a bummer
The risk of being murdered by roving packs of drug fiends and/or your transportation, (to get outta' there), getting stolen somewhat offsets my desire to visit our neighbors to the south. As far as how big this problem is... That's 100 folks a month and .287 folks a day! Good Grief.
there is no distinction in who they kill/rob, so it would be safe to say visit america's hat (Canada) rather than its pants(Mexico)...they are tolerant up there
No way would i feel safe traveling into Mexico, it just seems crime and drug infested, and i believe the Mexican government needs to step it up. I believe the Mexican government is trying to down play an essentially extreme problem in their country
I think it's safe to travel in Mexico. "some places where paupers live in are controlled by illegal organization. But they won't hurt visitors."one of my friends who has been to Mexico told me.
I always feel safe traveling to Mexico just because i have some family there in the city but even then you always have to be aware of everything going on around you like if you can refrain from speaking english that helps a lot because some people will take advantage of you and i think you will be fine as long as you get your car parked in a secure lot and always have your purse close to you and dont get seperated. I really just think that when people get abducted and get stuff stolen its because theyre stupid, take care of your stuff.
I would be pretty scared just driving down there.. i don't think it would be very safe to travel there... maybe taking a cruise or something would be on the safer side.. but definitely would leave my car at home...
i would still go to Mexico if i got the opportunity. i've been before and i really love it there, i probably wouldn't visit Ciudad Juarez, though. this is really a sad situation for the people of Mexico.
I wouldn't say i feel safe going to mexico, but i wouldn't feel constantly in danger. I think as long as americans keep to their business, they'll be alright.
safe isnt necessarily the word i would use. their government is so corrupt that its corrupting the people. Not enough is done to control the violence and chaos.
