Lego, Cav (the Lego brand name was derived from the Danish expression "leg godt" - play well - and lego also translates in Latin as "I study" or "I put together"...really, one of the world's most perfect words!)
Sunshine Cavalluzzi: Mama of the three smartest, funniest, and all-around most fabulous (and fabulously good-looking!!) children on the planet: Lucy (who's nine and a Brookhaven fourth grader), JD (who is seven and a half and is in second grade at Brookhaven), and Micah (who is five and just started kindergarten at Brookhaven) and an EDHS grad from the famous class of '93. I'm proud to have coached the ROCK STAR, frequent Orange County CHAMPION EDHS Mock Trial team for the thirteen awesometastic years! I'm a UCSD grad (Go Fightin' Tritons!) and I spent a semester in London (the best thing I did in college - you ALL should study abroad!!).
I really really believe in Gandhi's idea that "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" and Margaret Mead's reminder to "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
and I LOVE: my family, my amazing circle of friends and keeping up with them on Facebook, EDHS, Mock Trial, yummy food, traveling, swimming, THE BEACH, being a soccer mom, good quotes, good books...especially Harry Potter and To Kill A Mockingbird (Lucy's middle name is Harper after Harper Lee and Micah's middle name is Atticus), funny and fabulous TV (The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Jeopardy!, The West Wing, The Office, Parks & Recreation, Top Chef, The Newsroom....), the awesometastic Disney cruise I took with my family two summers ago, and active, energetic, thoughtful, polite, and ongoing discussions about INTERESTING THINGS like CONTEMPORARY WORLD AFFAIRS!! :)
In terms of my favorite kinds of news, I (obviously) love politics and political news, college basketball [(GO DUKE!) - though I watch a lot less than I used to before I had kids; less, alas, with the arrival of each subsequent MiniCav :)], stories about people who completely defy the conventions with which they were raised, and the huge impact of small actions...the ways people decide to create change locally and globally.
I really love teaching this class and am VERY MUCH looking forward to this semester and your FANTASTIC contributions!!!

Colin Cullinan: Senior at El Dorado High school on the football team. I like to go to the beach and snowboard in my spare time and I have a brother that is a sophmore.
My name is Devin Foley and I am the only child of my two parents. I have been at El Dorado every year I've been in high school and plan to graduate here. I really enjoy being around friends, and family. I always enjoy meeting new people and I enjoy traveling as well as global news. I also do study in my spare time about things that interest me. For example, social communications, computer science, and business. I also follow the belief that people are entitled to do what makes them happy. I really can't wait to see what this class holds for this year and I'm sure it'll be something I find interesting and enjoy.
My name is Zach Nash, i am 17 and a junior this year. i am a part of EDHS drumline and jazz band. i get most of my news from my parents watching fox news.
Amber Kennedy: I'm seventeen and a senior. I play the viola in Orchestra and Sinfonia, and I sing in Girl's Chorus. I love music and listen to almost all genres of metal. I'm very shy and am afraid of talking in front of people, but I thought that this class would be interesting and help me learn more about what's going on in the world.

My name is Sami Khaliq, I live with my parents and two siblings in a house in Yorba Linda. My brother Amman is 13 and a Freshman at Valencia (IB Program) and the other, Zain is 11 and a 6th grader at YLMS. My mother was born in Lahore, Pakistan but she grew up in Chicago she represents my American side. My father was born and raised is Lahore, Pakistan and I see him as my Pakistani side.
My world views are heavily influenced by my belief in human rights and a belief that government can be a force for good in peoples lives. My heroes are all people that faced oppression and struggled to achieve equality for all. Some examples of my heroes are people like Muhammad Ali Jinnah,Gandhi, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Che, Vladimir Lenin, Martin Luther King Jr, Harvey Milk, Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat and other people who fought against oppression.
I love napping, eating, and being lazy. I listen to a lot of music but my favorite genre has always been rap, I love playing basketball for fun. I like hanging out with friends and love having debates about politics or philosophy or history with them. (Because I always win). My favorite book has to be Lord of the Flies because it shows how people at least seem to try to band together and work as teams. (Although it doesn't always work.) I enjoy watching TV, Breaking Bad, The Daily Show, and as of now, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The most important news to me is always the saddest, news that shows that people are suffering I feel needs to be highlighted so they are helped by charities or other organizations. I feel like we all should be fighting oppression, poverty, and other struggles that humans feel. Just because these problems always have existed doesn't mean they always will be.
Hi everyone. My name is Kayli Perry, kind of like Katy Perry but not quite. I am a 17 year old senior at EDHS. I am part of the El Dorado Track Team (I have been for three years) and I am the Editor for Creative Writing Club (I was the president last year)! My favorite pastimes are creative writing, reading and listening to music. They are all extremely relaxing and allow me to expand my creativity. I plan to attend a four year college next fall, although I have no idea what to major in yet. But I do hope to study abroad and expand my knowledge of the world. I love to learn how other people live and how other cultures differ.
My favorite type of news is fashion, because I love to see what other people are wearing in different parts of the world and how it relates to their culture.
Riley Whitaker: I am a shy and awkward teenager that has an interest in politics. In fact in the last few years I have had a growing interest in politics and I thought that this class would be a great outlet to share my opinions. My politics are influenced by writers such as Voltaire, Thomas "TJ" Kirk, Howard Bloom, James Diamond and Nietzsche.
For some personal information about me I'm a musician and incredible lazy.
Dylan Breneman: I have two younger brothers, I am street drum major, play the baritone, and love the mountains. If you ever want to know how to be a drum major let me know, I love to teach people. I receive the majority of my news from watching the news in the morning and watching youtube videos after school.
Zachary James Francine: I'm 17 years old and I'm a senior! I am on varsity football and track & field and I have loved every moment of it. I have a little sister named Halle who is now an 8th grader at Tuffree. I'm very involved at my church and play guitar for our student worship team.
Overall I stand for the ideals represented by the Republican Party. I believe that everyone, left and right, has the right to voice their opinion whether it concerns gay rights, civil rights, religon, etc.
I usually watch Fox News or use their website. I try to distance myself from personalities like Sean Hanity when listening to commentary, prefering Mike Huckabe and Bill O'Reily.
I'm very excited for this year and I hope to learn!
My name is Kristina Chaney, and I am 17 years old. I have 3 older sisters, an older brother, and a younger brother who is currently a freshman here at El Dorado. I am looking forward to finishing high school, and seeing what the world has to offer. I am the tenor saxophone section leader in the school's band, and I march in the winter drum line. Although I am fascinated by most news, I find politics interesting, and would like to learn more about it.
Hi :) My name is Amanda Nguyen, though most know me as Amy. I am currently 17, a senior at EDHS, and sadly, I don't really know what I want to do in the future. While figuring out what I don't like is easy, finding out what i like is the hard part. As of right now I'll most likely go to a college in California, majoring in something business-y. I do plan to study abroad for a semester, somewhere in Europe hopefully (but I wouldn't mind going to Australia or New Zealand).
As for my family, I am the youngest of three girls. My oldest sister is Sami (who turned 21 and is a 4th year student at UCSB) and my other sister is Katie (who is 18 and a first year at University of the Pacific). My hobbies vary a lot (I go through phases of interests), but most of the time I dabble in photography, writing, reading, pondering, and daydreaming. I love the idea of traveling around the world, meeting and seeing new things. My favorite season of the year is winter, then fall-- mostly because I love colder weather and all the clothes i can wear (coats, boots, and HATS)!!! I don't go out of my way to follow popular trends, meaning if what I'm doing coincidentally coincides with fads, then so be it.
I am not very aware of current events or politics, which is why I took this class in hopes to change that. I figured that taking this class would expand my knowledge of what is happening around the world and prepare me for the future. I haven't really watched the news or really cared (that sounds bad but it's true), so i always made the assumption based off of other people that politics are boring. Therefore, I'm not sure as to my preference of politics and such; however, the areas of interests would probably include fashion, traditions/legends, architecture, and other intriguing historical aspects.
My name is Jamina Straub, I'm 17 years old and a foreign exchange student from Switzerland, so I want to apologize if my English is not so good yet. I now live in Fullerton in a lovely host-family with two little siblings, Brody (6) and Carter (2). I'm going to be here for the next 10 months as a senior at EDHS. I love playing soccer and I'm trying to join the EDHS soccer team. I came to the US to learn English, meet new great people and make a lifetime experience. I love almost every kind of sports and travelling. I've visited various countries in Europe and Asia with my family.
My family in Switzerland means a lot to me. We live in a town near Zurich next to a small lake. My brother Luca (19) is my best friend and the reason why I play soccer. Everything is very different here. As you may know, Switzerland is a very tiny country and so is everything in it! My school has only 400 students so you can imagine how overwhelming the first day of school was at EDHS. I was very nervous on the first day of school because I didn't know anyone in this huge school!
My favourite kinds of news are social news, but I'm also interested in fashion.
My name is Alexis Duran. I am the type to satisfy easily. I love eating, joking, debating, philosophy, poetry and video games. However, I am usualy the quiet one and spent an enourmous amount time in my head.
My name is Kristie Stoermer. My friends call me KSTO for fun. I am seventeen years old and have one brother named Eric. I love to dance and was on the dance team for the last three years. My favorite subjects are history and science, and I believe the worst thing to exist is math. I hope to someday be either a nurse practitioner or a physicians assistant. My favorite activities are going to the beach, hanging out with friends, and shopping. My parents watch the news everyday, however I don't pay much attention to it but I am most interested in political news and fashion. My most favorite topics to learn about are wars.
My name is Derek Reilly, my friends call me D-ri. I play baseball at El Dorado and hope to play in college after this year. I have one brother, luke, who is in 7th grade at Tufree, and Taya who is a 6th grader at Brookhaven. I love spending time with my family and going on adventures and vacations. My favorite news to read or listen to from around the world is sports because it is so interesting to hear about all the different games and contests outside of our country. my favorite subject in school is history and when I grow up I want to be a firefighter.
