Andrew Tahmooressi, 25, was trying to visit a friend near the border in San Ysidro March 31 when he missed the last exit on Interstate 5 and inadvertently crossed into Mexico. His mistake was apparently due in part to a poorly marked - and recently changed - sign marking the last chance to make a U-turn back toward the U.S. He was taken into prison because he was carrying several firearms (legally registered) which are a way to help him feel safe and to help him cope with his PTSD after serving as a marine for the US. Since the incident, a brightly lit, larger sign has been placed announcing the U-turn towards the United States.
What could be done to help prevent this in the future? Is it morally just for Mexican officers to keep Tahmooressi in prison, considering that the firearms he held were legally registered in the US? Should he be released? What can be done to aid the former marine to bring him back home? Does the US have an obligation to use its diplomatic ties with Mexico to free Tahmooressi?
This is ridiculous and i do not think that he should have been kept in prison, considering that he was not even a Mexican citizen. Our government needs to take the initiative and negotiate with the Mexican government, as their responsibility. It is definitely our obligation to return our citizen and make safer signs in the future.
Well, this is just a mistake, but they should check the signs more often and make sure everything is accurate. He should not have been arrested or kept in prison, C'monn!!
To prevent this they should go through and make improvements to that freeway(creating Jobs) and They do have the right to yeah people make mistake but not punishing him would be immoral. What make him better then everyone else? He entered foreign soil with US legal firearms, i understand it was a mistake but that's life honestly. They will most likely just have him pay a fine and carry on.
He should not have been kept and prison and should of been returned to the U.S once they realized the firearms were legally registered in the United States.
I think Mexico should have the right to put him in prison, but he should be aloud to leave if he is planning on going back to the U.S. anyways, the U.S. should get involved if Mexico is not letting him leave at all
The officials in mexico obviously should of checked more thoroughly on the legality of the firearms and realized he had mistakenly entered Mexico borders. He should of st least been returned to the U.S. instead of being held in prison in Mexico.
Well i understand why Mexico did what they did, however i do also understand that this whole thing was just a big mistake. I believe he should be released however we do not need to bring about other things in order to free him. It will happen in time.
I don't think that he should be kept in prison but the same thing, if not worse, would occur if someone even TRIED to enter the U.S. with firearms as the ex-marine did. The Mexican government won't keep him much longer; soon the he will be released with merely a fine or something. The US doesn't have to do much; Mexico will let him go. Obviously he's going to be detained. He entered a foreign country with firearms. It doesn't matter if they're legal here, they aren't legal in Mexico. Yeah, he made a mistake but it doesn't change what happened. It's not like the man is going to be held in prison for the rest of his life.
I think this whole thing is just a big misunderstanding and will blow over very quickly once he is released. I think the sign should be more noticeable and the U.S. should help get him released.
To prevent further incidents they should make the sign more visible and not hidden and if still missed be able to do a U-turn as soon as possible. Also the fact that the Mexican government is holding them is bad and he should be released.
He should not be kept in prison, he is not a Mexican citizen and he was not breaking any U.S laws. It was all a mistake nothing more. It's there fault for not having a decent sign. He deserves a apology!
Since he is not a citizen he should not be kept in prison. His Fire Arms are legally registered so why should it matter where hes at as long as they're legal
