Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law a controversial marriage bill legalising polygamy, opposed by many women and also by Christian leaders
The law now allows for equal property and inheritance rights and abolished the practice of unofficial traditional marriages which were never registered
MPs did reject the committee amendment which said a woman should only be entitled to 30% of matrimonial property after death or divorce
Much critique is that it is going to be difficult to determine what each spouse is entitled to if one of them divorces or their husband dies
Since the women had no say in this law, should they be able to have as much as the men? What do you think the Christian Community should do about this? Do you think it will last? Is it okay as long as the women are all aware of each spouse in advance?
The women should be able to have as much as the men. The Christian community should work to get equality between the men and women. Polygamy should not be allowed it is very weird! too me at least.
I think the women should be able to have as much of the men but i don't think the christian community should do anything about it. I don't think it will last long because many people don't like nontraditional laws and will try to get rid of it. i think it is fine as long as the women knows shes entering a polygamist family and that her husband will have other spouses.
I think that the women should have as much entitlement as the men do and that the Christian community should rally up a group to protest against the new polygamy law. I don't think this law will last very long because more people are against polygamy than are for it.
I personally feel that such a law should be wanted by the majority for legitamate moral reasons. If it is religious, I would probably believe that they should be allowed to marry how they want thoguh I personally disagree with polygamy
The women should receive the same property that the men do. I don't think this law should be outlawed because certain religions allow this practice and removing it could create more controversy.
Woman should definitely have more say in it. The christian community should protest and peacefully fight back against and try to get it changed. I don't know how long this will take but it doesn't matter if they know of each other in advance it still wrong
