A 22 year old woman disguised in a veil threw acid on her friends face in Dagenham, east London, while in her home. Mary Konye, attacked her because she had once called her ugly. Naomi Oni suffered burns to her face and chest. The victim claimed to feel depressed and often suicidal since the incident. This was a premeditated attack to "burn and disfigure" her victim.
Obviously this is way too severe. And to think that it led to suicide. For me personally, suicide is one of the most heart-wrenching things in this world and breaks my heart to hear. I do not wish it upon anyone. I think she should have been the bigger person and not fought fire with fire. Plenty of people get bullied or criticized for their weight, appearance(face), or ability and she didn't have to take it that far. Everyone has their own struggles and if they stay strong, so can that girl. I am not sticking up for the girl calling her ugly because that is horrible too, but when you step back and look at it....one word:UGLY led to someone taking their own life..now you can balance that one out.
This is a tragic story, but the response of both the perpetrator of the crime as well as the lawyer of the perpetrator is absolutely disgusting. First of all, the claim of the victim, Naomi Oni, is that Mary Konye attacked her with the acid due to Oni calling her ugly. While I don't condone people calling others ugly, I definitely don't think that throwing acid on someone as a result is justified. However, the response of Konye and her lawyer just infuriate me. First, Konye claimed that Oni threw the acid on herself for media attention. That is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard in my life. Why would anyone throw acid on themselves, severely disfigure their own face, then publicize themselves so everyone could see them in their tragic state? But it doesn't end there. Apparently, Konye has since admitted to throwing the acid herself (no surprise there), but she still says that she didn't have any intention of harming her victim in the process. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? What other intention could anyone POSSIBLY have in throwing acid on someone? Are they a chemist that wants to test the acidity of a substance? Konye is frankly an idiot for claiming something like that. But wait, there's more! Konye's lawyer claims that "The reason for this incident will always be shrouded in some doubt and mystery,". I am not making this up, this is verbatim, just read the end of the article. There is NO doubt and NO mystery surrounding this case. Someone threw acid on someone else, and regardless of any circumstances surrounding it, there has to be justice.
I think the prison time is appropiate. But i also think she should be paying compensation for the rest of her life to the victim because she has scarred the victim for life both physically and mentally
I think 12 years in jail is a good amount of time. However now that other women will probably have to live with many scars and will be in pain for a while. Calling someone ugly shouldn't result in acid being thrown in your face. Maybe just a punch in the face instead.
She should be locked up for a long time, she is obviously unstable and should not be in society if she is going to attack some one everytime someone is rude to her.
Appearances are not and should not be everything, yet there are often times when it matters because they make your first impressions. Throwing acid on someones face is a clear act of crime, especially if it was planned. Mary Konye should be punished for what she has done and the consequences Naomi Oni has to go through for rest of her life. So, I think 12 years is not short for running someone's face.
I think that the amount of time she has been sentenced is logical. She should receive therapy after or during prison so she doesn't do something like this again.
