The article talks about how in several communities, students, teachers, and health professionals are encouraging later start times for schools, but many school districts are actually having school start earlier times. Several studies are mentioned, which all basically say that having later starting times for schools would have many benefits, physical and mental. The article also talks about how there are those who are on the other side of the spectrum who actually want the earlier school times, because it allows for more time to work on homework and for sports practice, and doesn't interfere with the morning schedule of parents. It also speaks about getting five hours of sleep per night is actually viewed as honorable, and a sign that you are a hard worker. I can honestly agree with both sides of the argument, because I think everyone could use some extra sleep, but at the same time having less time for homework would be annoying, and it would mean having to get up earlier anyways because my dad wouldn't be able to take me to school. Now for some questions.
Do you personally think that school should start later or earlier? Why?
When you get less sleep, do you really feel more physically or mentally inept?
What time do you sleep at night, and what keeps you up?

I really do believe that haveing later start times for school would encourage students to be more alert and prepared for their day. I am really exhausted today, and I'm struggling to stay awake in classes and pay attention, which is unlike me. My doctor informed me that teenagers' bodies are actually programmed to fall asleep later and wake up later than adults are. Almost all of the times when I can't fall asleep is due to stress from school, and pretty much every night I stay up late is because I'm trying to complete homework.
I see this from both sides, I personally don't like waking up in the morning but I would rather go to school early so I can have time to work and do things other than go to school all day. I feel everyone should have an elective first period so you can have a little more time to wake up and not have to do math at 7 AM when you just woke up 5 minutes ago.
I don't really care what time it starts, I just care about what time it ends. However, when i get more sleep, I do feel more energized and awake throughout the day, both physically and mentally. Thinking alot usually keeps me up at night.
It should start later. For those who hate daylight savings days(1 hour forward on the clock), like me, late start days are best because our bodies don't get confused that it feels 6 AM, when it's actually 7 AM. But most of all, it is best to wake up when the sun is fully out, not when the sun is invisible in the morning.
I think school should star later so people would have more time to wake up and be more functional for school. When i get less sleep it just feels harder to do things and i think that is for everyone.
I personally think that should start later, but say like an hour and a half later. When i sleep less i completely feel mentally and physically inept, when i get to school i cant focus, i can barely keep my eyes open and especially driving to and from school. On Average i sleep about 5 to 6 hours but some nights about 2 to 3 hours just staying up doing homework. Some teachers give large amounts of homework and expect it to be done the following day.
I get up at 6 every day in order to get here for 0 period and i can honestly say i really don't care what time school starts. I will still be as physicaal and mental as i already am. Changing the hour doesn't change much at least in my case.
I would like school to start later since I am certainly not a morning person, but I do not think that changing school starting time will affect the hours of sleep one gets. The fact that a day is 24 hours does not change. If the school starting time is moved back, students will just do more work at nights than during afternoon and go to bed later.
I think what students need to do to get more sleep is better time management. I feel more both physically and mentally inept when I don't get enough sleep, and i think it would be same for everyone.
I think that schools should start earlier because it allows for students to be more alert in class and not fall asleep. Studies have also shown that the brain is working at its best later in the morning and this will allow students to catch up on sleep if they had to stay up late the night before doing homework.
I think school should start earlier personally, because i have a 0 period and I think it is great. I don't usually feel inept, honestly i weirdly feel more awake. I usually go to bed around 12 and wake up at 6.
School should start at an earlier time. The most common problem is that kids do not go to bed until really late and this why they are tired in the morning. Starting later will get in the way of after school sports.
I think that school should start at an later time because it makes kids more focused on academics and not tired throughout the day. But students should work on their sleep schedules.
I feel like having school start early is best, because if not it just wastes half the day and time for homework. Having school start later would just result in people just putting off their homework until the morning.
Honestly i don't care what time school starts because we will all eventually get used to waking up at whatever time we have to to get to school but i would rather go to school early just so that we have more time after school to do whatever we want.
I feel that if school starts later, more people would be alert and well rested. I also feel that students in American high schools have a relatively overwhelming amount of time to do much more minuscule homework in comparison to other countries so thus I feel that if school times started later, American students would be able to sleep more and still get their same homework done because of the fact that they would become better time managers.
I could argue both ways. IF we were to start school later we would most likely have more sleep time but if we were to start school earlier we would have more time in the day after school. Personally, I feel more alert earlier because if I ever have too much homework I'll go to sleep and I'll wake up early to finish it. This, however is different than waking up early to go to school. When I'm sleep deprived and I have to go to school, I feel drained and grumpy and I don't pay attention nor do I want to pay attention. Later in the day I feel normal, though, whether I had plenty of sleep or if I didn't have enough. I can't really say what keeps me up at night because, well, I just don't know. My thoughts take a hold of me but taking some ZQuil usually helps a bit (:
I think that schools already start at a reasonable time and we should be responsible enough to know when a good time for us to go to bed is. When I get little sleep (every night) the next day I feel weak, dizzy, slower to react, and nauseous. I go to sleeps at whatever time feels right I do not give myself a set time since i work a lot of nights and do not get home util it is late.
I do not think it should start any later. People will just stay up later then. I personally do not react to the amount of sleep i get unless it is numerous days on little sleep. I can do the same amount regardless and I think that it keeps things simpler for parents to take their kids to school. When i am up at night it is usually homework, or i msised an episode of something on TEVO.
I don't think it should start later because then we would have to leave later, I personally do not perform worse on less sleep, i usually do not go to sleep until 11 or 12 because i like TV
I think that the time we start school is good and that it should not be changed. I like having more time after school to do things. The amount of sleep really depends on the person, I perform the same on little and a lot of sleep. Things that keep me up are normally my homework or my phone.
