How Seared Into Your Brain Is Branding? And What's Ours?

The idea of "branding" is one that economists - and sociologists! - spend a great deal of time talking and thinking about - it essentially means the reputation of a company/entity - what the widespread perception of that thing might be.

An OC Register article last year detailed a national study determining the 10 most trusted American brands, using the criteria of ability, concern, connection, consistency, and sincerity (http://www.ocregister.com/articles/values-348119-brands-trust.html?pic=2) - they were

1. Amazon 2. Ford 3. Coca-Cola 4. Southwest 5. Apple 6. Target 7. FedEx 8. Starbucks 9. Nordstrom 10. Nike

In another study, Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/powerful-brands/) identified the top ten most powerful brands as (in order):

1. Apple 2. Microsoft 3. Coca-Cola 4. IBM 5. Google 6. McDonald's 7. General Electric 8. Intel 9. Samsung 10. Louis Vuitton

To make the list, Forbes "started with a universe of more than 200 global brands...required brands to have a presence in the U.S....[and] valued the brands on three years of earnings and allocated a percentage of those earnings based on the role brands play in each industry (e.g., high for luxury goods, low for airlines) [and] applied the average price-to-earnings multiple over the past three years to these earnings to arrive at the final brand value."  So they were mostly looking at earnings.

How frequently do you patronize (give your business to) either the most-trusted or the most powerful brands above? Do you think their branding makes a difference in your consumer choices (i.e. would you be more likely to shop at, say, Target than Wal-Mart or Nordstrom than JC Penney because of the stores' various brands)?

And, what would you say is El Dorado's brand? What characteristic makes us distinct from other high schools? How do we or could we demonstrate and/or promote that brand?

my question is why are most brands censored. I understand some of the more... adult companies, but in 8th grade, i had to turn my shirt inside out because it said "God didn't create all men equal, Smith and Wesson did" with a little logo for my aunt's shooting range on the back.

I defently believe the brand name or the reputation has an impact but then again i also think that it boils down to how relvent the brand is for example you have burger king which was arguably in the top of the food chins but then for some reason it lost its relvents and has been in a recent decline and then you have places like five guys which mange to be the new up and comer thous having a relvents to the crowd

brands have a lot of control over what people buy. but it also depends on quality. Quality> Quantity. thats why people tend to buy more expensive clothing because it'll last longer. would you buy a 50dollar pair of shoes that will last you for a vople of weeks or a pair 100+ that will last you longer than a couple of months. thats why nike is more reliable with what they make even though they have a reputation of using "sweatshops"

I know quality is a mjor part about branding, for example my grandfather used to only buy Ford's because that was the brand he trusted whereas my Dad doesn't like Ford and prefers foreign car companies more (We currently have 2 Suzuki, 1 Kia, 1 Toyota, and 1 Honda vehicle(s).)
For the most trusted/powerful brands I definitely go to Starbucks way more than necessary and my current phone is the first non Samsung that I have; and since I personally am not big on Apple phones I actually have an HTC brand one.
And I would say El Dorado's brand/characteristic would be pride. I mean we literally "reak" of Hawk Pride and there have been numerous occasions over the past four years where other schools have trashed talked ElDo (esp. after Bell Games) and I've seen the majority of the students brush it off and hold themselves to higher standard of excellence because there is such a strong current of pride flowing from teachers, students, alumni, and even future students.

Branding definitely makes a difference regarding consumer choices. Consumers tend to prefer to buy products from brands they're more familiar with, usually basing their future purchases by their previous experience with the brand.

i think branding makes a big difference in whether you buy a product or not because having a good reputation is a big factor in any thing and peopel would rather buy a product that is known to be good then buy a knock off brand that maybe decent

Well branding is going to become more and more prevalent as time goes on, and there's not much we can do about it.
