In Africa, Seeking a License to Kill

MEMBERS of the African Union will meet today to discuss recent calls by some African leaders to withdraw from the International Criminal Court. These calls must be resisted. The continent has suffered the consequences of unaccountable governance for too long to disown the protections offered by the I.C.C. Those leaders seeking to skirt the court are effectively looking for a license to kill, maim and oppress their own people without consequence. They believe the interests of the people should not stand in the way of their ambitions of wealth and power; that being held to account by the I.C.C.

whats you opinion on this? should they actually go with this?

That is wrong!!!! Those "leaders" need to stay in the I.C.C. because if their reason to withdraw has selfish motives behind it, then it'll be better for their people if no withdrawl occurs.

If the African Leaders want to withdrawl I don't think there is much a union can do about stopping them. However, every measure should be taken to stop these countries from hurting their citizens.

There are so many things that go on within the government that citizens don't know about. There have been reported cases of government assassinations against their own citizens that pose a threat to the government. I think this is very wrong, but I don't know how much they can do about it.

It seems like the African leaders are just like our government as long as it doesn't effect them it's okay.

I agree with Zoe...It's not right but it's really their choice we can't exactly oppress them and force them to stay...because who knows then they might become even more oppressive, but we should keep a very close eye on them.

They shouldnt be able to leave the court. I mean just think how war torn this country is if they leave the court lord knows what will happen to the people there.

This is obviously wrong but I don't know that there's anything we can really do about it. Africa has been in chaos for decades and no amount of aid has made things any better. We can't force them to stay in the ICC if they don't want to.
