On thursday three British organizations filed a legal challenge in the European Court of Human Rights. They want the court to declare the collection of data, including emails and social media messages, in secret programs revealed by the American intelligence analyst Edward J. Snowden to be an illegal breach of the right to privacy. Do you think they are right in doing this? What's your opinion on the matter?
I think that online surveillance is a breach of privacy. But when you think about it, it seems rather necessary for security officials to be on the lookout for potential terrorists or other threats to the public. So they keep an eye on people's emails and such. However, the officials might abuse their power and use the obtained information for blackmailing certain people.
I don't think that online surveillance is a breach of privacy. The government does this to protect you from terrorists and criminals. They don't do it to find out how you and your girlfriend/boyfriend are and read your conversations about what stupid thing you did last weekend. They simply do it to protect their citizens from threats.
i don't think its bad for the government to keep a surveillance.. i mean if you want you're life to be so secretive that you want no one to know about, it would be pretty suspicious. the government is just trying to do their best.
everyone is or has been using personal survailiance just without us nowing it. like russia's been duing it and its going to be at an extreme during the winter olympics.
I think that online surveillance is a breach of privacy. If we let our government get away with it then are we really any different than the Chinese and Russian style of governments we preach against?
I'm not sure if this is partially due to the fact that I had to sit through a 3 hr presentation on how the U.S., particularly CA/Orange County, combats terrorism but I honestly think it's ok that they do. They are doing it for our safety not because they want to read all of our tweets about our latest drama or next meal. I mean if you're so concerned about the government reading something that you said that you don't want them to see why in the world would you put it on the internet? I mean Disney can make 5 year olds understand that whatever you do on the internet will always be there even if you think it's gone. Nothing vanishes there is always some sort of digital "paper trail" following you. Plus like the guys who gave the presentation yesterday told us they only really look into people and their history and possibly into their digital footprint if they are showing serious links to a terrorist attack or part of a terrorist oragnization. As far as I'm concerned we as a people need to realize that they are doing this for our safety and we can't complain that they're "invading our privacy" and "breaking our rights" and then complaining when things like the 9 year old plane rider show how there are loop holes in our protective services. Not tracing or surveying people will leave an even bigger loop hole for perpurtrators to go through...
I think its fine they have online surveillance, I do understand why they do it. And I rather them do it if they are going to protect our country, but sometimes they go to far, but we can't stop it.
