Up to 37 people died Friday after a fire tore through a psychiatric institution in Russia, a regional branch of the country's Investigative Committee said, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency. A total of 59 people were inside the building when the fire broke out, the Health Ministry said, according to RIA Novosti. The Emergencies Ministry said 23 people have been rescued, according to the news agency. The fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. Moscow time in the men's ward of the Oksochi mental health care clinic, state-run Itar-Tass reported. The facility is a low-level wooden building. In April, a fire at another psychiatric hospital near the capital, Moscow, left 38 people dead. President Vladimir Putin called for an investigation and a closer focus on fire safety in hospitals after that blaze.
Do you think the Russian government should step in and make sure all hospitals are up to regulations?
Yes the Russian government should step in to make sure all hospitals are up to regulations therefore accidents like this are prevented from happening and so that the government can easily assure that every hospital is providing reliable care for each of its patients.
The Russian Governments definiatelty needs to step in to regulate their government institutions. It is the right of the citizens to feel safe and protected by their government.
of course, their mental health is already at risk because of their mental illness, but at least their physical health should be protected because the hospital is something the government can control.
If the fire was started by a patient, the hospital really should regulate what the patients are allowed to have in their room. It is clearly dangerous for someone with a mental illness to have something that could start a fire.
I definitely think that the Russian government should step in and make sure all hospitals are up to regulation, especially after two different fires broke out at psychiatric hospitals.
That sounds sad and scary. A fire in a mental hospital? That should be prevented at all costs. The Russian government should provide better safety measures for its people, especially those in a psychiatric institution!!
Yes they should step up, esp since this mental health facility was a "low level wooden building". Last time i checked any sort of wooden building is a potential fire hazard...and plus that's much easier to break out of versus cement or something...
