The upcoming 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Richard Wagner has sparked a great deal of controversy in Germany. Wagner, famous for his brilliant compositions and infamous for both his strong views against women and Jews- along with the dubious honor of being Hitler's favored composer- has remained a rather frequent point of debate in a country that still hates and fears its actions in World War Two.
Enthusiasts, meantime, insist that the man's music and the man's views can be evaluated separately, and that one neither condones nor taints the other.
Personally, i like Wagner's work. His work as a composer is comparable to that of Bach, Handel, and the other great composers of his time. Although he had strong views against women and jews, it was a different time were such views werent neaerly as outlandish. The fact that Hitler liked his music, probably because Wagner was German and antisemitic, doesnt discredit Wagner works work. Wagner was brilliant composer but not a good person.
