At least 10 people have been killed in an attack on a mainly Christian village near the violence-hit Nigerian city of Jos, officials say.
Eyewitnesses said houses were burnt and villagers were cut down with machetes. State radio reported that the raiders were disguised as soldiers. Hundreds of people have died in communal violence between Muslim and Christian groups near Jos this year. Although the clashes take place between Muslims and Christians, observers say the underlying causes are economic and political.
Do you think the Nigerian government is capable of keeping peace between the people? What do you think people could do to create a good brotherhood between Christians and Muslims?
I dont think that the government is capable of keeping peace between them because for manypeople, their religions are more important to them than there government. During these hectic times i really dont think there is anything that will create a "brotherhood" between these two groups. Its nearly impossible.
I definately think the government can have an influence. Since the government has a voice that can be heard and the people have an unfaltering faith the government could use that to their advantage. If the govt. really wanted to they could talk about the similarities between the religions of Islam and Christianity (that you shouldn't kill) and the people will listen because they know it has to do somthing with religion. In these tough times, the govt. should really try to think out of the box to create peace among its citizens!
Laws are already in place against violence and hate crimes. I don't know what Nigeria's laws are in terms of freedom of religion, but even if they were not in place that does not mean violence is encouraged. The government is nothing more than police officers standing in the middle of a war
The government cant force people to like someone so no i dont hink the government can force peace but i think they can do more to make laws more equal so there is less resentment
I do not think the goverernment is capable of keeping peace between them. The two groups have fought many battles against each other over the centuries. Before nigeria was an established country the 2 religion groups have collided. They have to send in troops if anything to keep them from fighting. Which may even cause more casualties!
This is sad. Same with most people here, I think that the government would not be capable of settling this hatred between the two groups. The solution is unknown and only time could tell what will happen in the end.
i dont think that the government there can do anything and if more people understood what the other believed than i think that there could be less hostillity towards one another.
