Police Officer Caught Driving Intoxicated in New Zealand - Group 2

Police officer, and instructor at the Poriruia Police College was caught and convicted of drunk driving in his home country of New Zealand last Friday. Detective Sergeant John Gualter, 42, was well over 2.5 times the legal limit when he was seen weaving across Highway 1, driving on the wrong side of the road, and narrowly avoiding colisions with other motor vehicles. Prior to this incident, he had a completely spotless criminal record, and had served 23 years with the police. Gualter was fined $1800.00 plus $260.00 in court fees and has had his driving rights suspended for nine months. When asked if he was going to resign, he said no, and said, "I'd love to keep my job, I enjoy my job, but I'll just have to let that process go along."

Should Officer John Gualter be permitted to keep his job in Poriruia???

Well he has had a cleen record before what he did but i think that he should be given another chance.

First of all, that police officer is a moron! Driving while intoxicated is unethical to everyone in society due to the possibility of endangering other drivers/people in general, and ESPECIALLY unethical to police officers who should be inforcing, not breaking, the law. I do not think that this police officer should be able to keep his job because its his responsibility to keep the community safe, not endanger it. Though his previous record was spotless, he may have driven drunk before and simply not been caught.

I think the police officer should resign, and if he does not, be removed from his job for driving while intoxicated. Drunk driving is a crime that harms everyone, and having an intoxication level so high above the legal limit also indicates that he showed no care for others. He was extremely ignorant to drive intoxicated, so while he had a clean record, this man should not be held up as a model of lawfulness to others in society.

I also think that it would be in the officer's best interest to resign. He's an officer and instructer, but can't follow the law himself, so he shouldn't be allowed to teach other people how to. I just think it would be hypocritical for him to keep his position.

I think he should be able to keep his job just because he had a clean record and this was his first time. I also think he should be able to keep his job because he has had it for 23 years. aww

It was a one time thing, and yeah it was bad but 1. he didn't do it while on duty and 2. he's done a good job other wise. On the other hand, 2.5 times over the legal drinking limit? Someone in his position, being a teacher on top of being an officer should know the good ol' "Don't drink and drive". So that being the case, I think he should maybe he should resign.

i dont think he should be able to keep his job because he is suppossed to set an example and abide the law which he failed to do so and he out himself in danger and also others by driving so recklessly.

I really hate hypocritical leaders. How can you live with yourself when you are telling others they cant do what you do? When being a public officer you have to follow the law just like everyone else, on and off duty. Drunk driving kills. This police officer should be fired.

I think he shouldn't be able to keep his job. Although he had a spotless record before, it is important to set a good example especially being a policeman. He represented the entire police force, whether on duty or offl, and failed to set a good example, and if he kept his job, i think the morailty of the police department that the people hold them to would be perceived a lot lower than its supposed to be.

we all make mistakes and this is his first criminal crime on his record. i think that he should be given another chance, but however, if it happens again he should then resign.

The police officer should be suspended for a period of time, until they find him fit to resume his work as "an enforcer o the law"
