Time for college students to see if they can stay afloat in the worst economy their generation has known.
Young people are carrying a load heavier than they normally bear as they scatter from campuses, judging from an AP-mtvU poll that finds students anxious about their finances, job prospects after graduation and the pressures facing their folks back home.
The poll surveyed students at 40 U.S. colleges, exploring financial pressures, job possibilities, their state of mind and when stress becomes depression. Among the findings on the economy:
22 percent of students said they worry a lot about having enough money to get through a typical week at school, and more fully one-third said they worry a lot about the finances of their parents.
Nearly one in five changed plans this year and decided to attend graduate or professional school after college because an undergraduate degree might not be enough to get them a job. Staying in school buys time for the economy to improve and defers repayment of student loans but adds living costs and debt.
11 percent of those whose parents lost a job veered away from grad school because they could not afford it. They were twice as likely to avoid grad school as those whose parents did not lose a job. Job loss in the family also made twice as many students consider dropping out 27 percent. Overall, nearly one in five considered quitting school.
32 percent said financial worries have a lot of impact on the stress they're under, up from 27 percent last spring.
What would you guys do? How are you planning on paying for school?

i will pay for college while i am working. everyone seems to be stressing themselves out. if you are not happy now when will you be? life just gets more stressful unless you learn how to stop the snowball affect. but its never too late... :)
college can be expensive, but luckily for me my parents are paying for it so i dont have to worry about student loans. I am very fortunate because obviously paying off loans can be very, very stressful.
thank god i dont have to worry about finding a way to pay for college it seems that everyone i know that is going to college is stressing about finding a way to pay for it, and if i decide to go to college in the future the Marines will pay for it all so thats a plus.
i know i have a college fund that my parents gave me that would be enough for pretty much 4-8 years...so yes, i am also very fortunate because i won't have to stress out over loans or a job. But i know student loans can be very stressful. YOu guys who also have scholarships are soo forunate too, that would also help so much!!

I'm not stressing about paying for college. But if I do end up working while in school, I'll probably try to find a job on campus and I'll do it because I want to make some money for myself.

my brother went to chapman for chemical engineering, which is a 5 year program. his first 4 years was on a scholarship so my parents didnt have to pay the whole $40,000 a year, however his 5th year doesnt count on a scholarship anymore so i know my parents were hit pretty hard by having to pay that, but they wouldnt let my brother take out a student loan, because they know how stressful it would be to pay back. thank goodness i dont have to worry about it either :)
iplan on paying for some myself by working, maybe some student loans and my parents are willing to help me out a little too. its a very stressful thing.
i hate asking my parents for money but they find it their obligation to send me off to college. I'm definitely going to apply for more scholarships for my 2nd year in college..
