Should she have answered differently?

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/Television/story?id=7381893&page=1

It was clear that Miss California was one of the top contenders for the 2009 miss USA crown, until the final question round..

Perex HIlton asked "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage," he said. "Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not."

Miss CA Carrie Prejean answered "I think it's great Americans are able to choose one or the other," she said. "We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what in my country, in my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be, between a man and a woman."

Some were offended by her answer, there were boos heard frrom the crowd and Perez Hilton was very dissappointed

I was floored," Hilton told ABCNews.com Monday. "I haven't said this before, but to her credit, I applaud her for her honesty. However, she is not a politician, she's a hopeful Miss USA. Miss USA should represent everyone. Her answer alienated millions of gay and lesbian Americans, their families and their supporters."

He also believes her answer cost her the contest because, to his knowledge, no Miss USA contestant has ever been booed during the question-and-answer portion of the show.

Do u guys think her answer cost her the crown?

it was a loaded question, no matter what she said whether for or against it, she would have been criticized, so i dont think those kind of questions should be asked.

That was a really hard question to begin with and what ever side she decides to go with, she's still going to loose favoritism from the opposing side. I'm just glad that she went with what she believed in as opposed to trying to figure out what the majority of people would like to hear. The only thing that gets me is when she says "...I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman". If she's going to say something like that, should should just believe it- no thinking involved.

She also said opposite marraige when refering to the traditional marriage that we know of so I am just going to blame the traditional pagaent stereotypes :P

I think that Perez Hilton shouldn't have asked that question. She's a Miss USA contestant, not a politician. But because Perez Hilton asked that question, she was obligated to answer and either way she would have been criticized for it. Again, either way, she probably would have lost the crown.

I think that she did a good job answering the question, she told the truth she didn't lie about what she thought. I think Perez Hilton(gossip columnist, and the judge that asked the question) is making way to big of deal about it and in the process of him being so dramatic about it he is hurting his career becaus he is not handeling it well. It is almost like he is telling her how to think and saying that everyone should believe his way or they will be prosecuted by him for it. He needs to learn that it is a free country and not everything revolves around Perez Hilton.

I really don't that it "Cost her the crown," the way she answered it simply wasn't eloquent. I think it's quasi-admirable that she stated her beliefs so honestly, but I do agree it was a loaded question.

I think its unfair that she can lose because of this. I think its awesome that she can speak out about what she believes in. thats a great quality to have.
but if she didnt want to step on other people's toes she souldve stopped before "in my family..."

I think she answered honestly and from her perspective of things. every one has different perspectives when it comes to same sex marrage.

you have a typo line four.

I personally appreciate her honesty. INstead of saying what everyone wanted to hear...she gave her honest opinion.

Perez Hilton should not have asked that question, but he did, and it's sad that he isn't exactly impartial...he slammed her in his blog for her answer. He proclaimed himself the queen of gossip. He has a whole blog dedicated to slamming celebs...so i think he started this controversy by asking a question that shouldn't have been asked at a beauty pageant.

I don't like how he took her answer so personally that he would create a whole bunch of bad media about her....just because she was being honest, I don't think that's fair.

I don't see how his reaction will hurt his career.  Plus, I think that he was really surprise, that's all.  And i don't really think he should have answered the question at all - it was going to be a lose-lose situation.

okay she has a right to express her opinion i think she shouldve had more reasoning and support for her answear rather than saying "i was raised that way" that just sounds ignorant.

wouldn't we want her to be truthful and able to express her opinion without being critized? if she had said differently then she would have been lying, and should she be praised for lying? i personally don't think so...i think it took courage to say the truth, expecting that people would be dispeased. i mean if she would have won answering the question differently, then would she really be "MISS AMERICA"?

Thats skrewd up. Half of the United states agrees with same sex marriage and half dont. Her getting boo'd for that answer is absolutely stupid. Dont you think that people who dont agree with same sex marriage get offended when all these people are argueing about gay rights? They said, "Miss USA should represent everyone. Her answer alienated millions of gay and lesbian Americans, their families and their supporters." What about those that aren't in support?? THey should be represented too.

That kind of question shouldnt be asked. any answer would have offended people! if she would have said she is okay with gay marriage than someone would say something about that too. its her opinion..at the same time she could have said "i dont feel right answering a question like that because i dont want to offend anyone with my opinion." people need to back off..she said it and thats that. i dont think it should cost her the crown.

honesty is an amazing quality to have. she stood up and spoke for what she believes. she didnt even discriminate against it, she simply said that it is how she was raised, her own PERSONAL opinion. she should not have lost or been disrespected for this, its not like she said that same-sex marriage is repulsive or anything. i think its just one more thing that the media blows out of poportion because of something a "celebrity" said. it happens all the time, but why not i guess? its starts publicity and gives us all something to talk about.

thats a really good point. obviously its impossible to find on person who believes in the same things as everyone????
it should be the quality of her answer. how she articulates what she believes in. not WHAT she believes in

yeah its perez hilton's fault for asking a ridiculous polarizing question.  she (talking about him) can whine all she wants about gays not getting equal rights. what is She doing about it? Because she (now talking about miss california) answered that way. whine on HER (back to the fruitcake) macbook? bag on some other celebrity and put some white secreted substance around their mouth.  perez is the douche who wanted her to answer in some way he could flame her, or praise her.

i agree, the question shouldn't even have been brought up.
but im glad, she spoke the truth instead of lying.

the question that perez asked is not a question everyone is gonna
agree with. everyone has different opinions and thoughts.
she spoke her honest answer so that's that.

theres gonna be people who always disagreeeee.
that's life.

as a Miss USA contestant should be...
she answered in a respectful way. i like that. :]
