WMUR News 9's Jean Mackin reported school officials are working to determine whether to establish guidelines about dancing in schools.
School staff, parents and students filled the high school's auditorium Wednesday night to talk about sexually explicit dancing, or grinding, that led to 19 students to be kicked out of one dance in February and another to be canceled in March.
"I got confused because I was one of the kids that kicked out, and I was confused on why I got kicked out," said Hayley Petrarca, a student.
"I was also very confused why I got kicked out," said Erin Vandewater, a student.
Many students said the dance moves take place at schools across the country and that there are no rules in place about what behavior is expected on the dance floor -- something most agreed should be defined, possibly in the student handbook.
"Judging by what the students think, there's not too big of a problem. This has been blown way out of proportion," said Matt Toleos, a student.
"We're willing to work together. We need to find a solution so we can have dances and keep having fun at Exeter High School," said Tom Stackhouse, a student.
The principal, Vic Sokul, agreed, saying he wants guidelines in place.
"The grinding is not addressed in our student handbook. I don't think we've really caught up to it yet. I think we will this summer when we rewrite our rules," he said.
Parents, students and school staff said the open discussion is a learning experience for everyone that will lead to better dances and high school memories.
"Clearly, we've heard we have a lot of solutions (and) everybody (is) on the same page. So, I'm really looking forward to a quick resolution," said Kris Magnusson, chair of the Cooperative School Board.
Exeter High School's proms are right around the corner, and there is another meeting scheduled in two weeks to discuss student behavior expected at dances.
Do you think anything can be done about "Grinding?"

welll, i bet if people keep pushing the issue of stopping it, then some kids will be creative enough and create some new dance. Maybe they'll bring the line dancing back...
