Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff is a lucky charm for one New York City construction worker. Queens resident Ralph Amendolaro said he saw Madoff's prison number in a newspaper and had a good feeling so he played the last three digits of it in the state lottery's Numbers game. It hit March 15, paying $1,500.

Lottery officials say other people had the same idea. The number combination 0-5-4 produced 501 winning tickets the Sunday after Madoff's guilty plea, up from 120 winners the previous day.

Madoff's prison registration number is 61727-054.

A lottery spokeswoman says people often play numbers they see on the news.

There is a group of social science teachers who play together whenever the jackpot gets really big - we call it the "Millionaire or Department Chair?" endeavor, figuring that whomever doesn't buy in will be left running the department when the rest of us split the jackpot and retire :) . 

Though I realize that the lottery is basically a regressive tax on people who can't do math (a bumper sticker I LOVE), for $5 or whatever my buy-in is, I love the two or three days of possibility...getting to plan out what I'd do with my winnings (BUY MY OWN ISLAND SO I CAN (a) LIVE AT THE BEACH FOREVER, (b) RUN MY OWN GOVERNMENT, AND (c) COMPETE IN THE OLYMPICS AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF MY OWN ISLAND NATION, plus we would have a place to park the luxury submarine that my husband wants to buy biggrin) for several days as if it's an actual possibility is totally worth $5.

That's how I get my money's worth out of the investment.  Since I know how long the odds are of ACTAULLY winning, I have to VIRTUALLY win to get the full value of my $5 :)  Otherwise, I might as well just buy a latte or something :)

I think all or most lottery winners have been more miserable than happy after they won the lottery but then again maybe it's just cause the winners tend to be people with the worst gambling problems.

Roy Sullivan has been struck by lightning 7 different times and survived, unfortunately he commited suicide at age 71.

Though they don't all go the Hugo Reyes route (anyone else watch LOST?), it is true that most lottery jackpot winners (75%) actually end up worse off financially (like, bankrupt) within 12 months of their winning.  Why?  BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION IN ECON :).  Take it as a cautionary tale so YOU can be in the happier and wealthier 25%.
