Obama apologizes for 'Special Olympics' joke

WASHINGTON, March 20, 2009 (AFP) US President Barack Obama has apologized for the first gaffe of his presidency, after he joked about his bowling prowess comparing it to the Special Olympics for people with intellectual disabilities.

In his first appearance on a US late night talk show since his November election, Obama told Jay Leno he had been practicing at the White House bowling alley after he flopped at the sport during the presidential campaign last year.

"I bowled a 129," he said to laughter from the "Tonight Show" audience in Los Angeles.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno deadpanned.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president replied.

Realizing the joke had fallen flat, the White House moved quickly to downplay it and Obama late Thursday telephoned Tim Shriver, the chairman of the Special Olympics, from Air Force One on the flight back to Washington.

"He expressed his disappointment and he apologized, I think, in a way that was very moving," Shriver told ABC on Friday.

"He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population; certainly he didn't want to embarrass or give anybody any more reason for pain or kind of suffering.

"He said he was a fan of the movement and I think, importantly, said he was ready to have some of our athletes over to the White House to bowl or play basketball, or help him improve his score," Shriver added.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said late Thursday: "The president made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics."

Obama "thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world."

Obama was in California touting his plan to create jobs, end the economic crisis and spark sweeping reforms of education, healthcare and energy.

Special Olympic-gate.

It seems that President Obama doesn't realize that he is literally the most powerful man IN THE WORLD. He keeps messing up and thinking he can fix everything with a band-aid and a kiss, and it doesn't work that way. Everyone on Earth is watching to see how we'll end up, and he needs to realize that all eyes are on him, ALL THE TIME.
Case in point: Tom Daschle.

I think its hilarious. At least Obama has a personality.  I'm sure their is mentally challenged people who could bowl better than that.

ps However, I DO think it's funny though that Obama had the audacity to say that. It's like he was trying to trump Joaquin Phoenix's interview.
hahahahaha

Well, eveyone says remarks like that all the time, and its funny to most people but he is the president, our powerful leader, and needs to be more careful about what he says. None the less, the fact that he apologized is good i guess... i bet he feels so stupid though.

i think he said what any normal human being wouldve said.. the only difference is that he is the president so he cant say those things. If Jay Leno had said it, it wouldve been funny , it wouldve been a w whole different story.

I think that most SO athletes would laugh it off or something but he never said anything truly derrogitory.
I also think that it was very respectful for him to make the phone call and apologize

i think it's something anyone would say just as a joke, and it is funny, but kind of disrespectful. the fact that he apologized is good though. if someone else said it, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but i guess because he IS the president he shouldn't have said it. i'm sure he didn't mean it to be offending though, so it's okay.

and about the intelligence level... you can say you don't support him, his policies, whatever. but saying he isn't intelligent is kinda out there.

yeah what he said was bad and immature right..but saying that HE is retarded and should be in the special olypics isn't? =/

I agree with Jason. Its funny because it shows tht our president has a personality but it was the wrong joke to say. I think he just didnt think before he said it and it was inapropriate. Its nice that he atleast apologized.

Only thing I ask is: If bush had said that joke would you guys be so willing to let him slide?  Just a thought.

I agree with Luis, I don't think Obama was making fun of the Special Olympics but just his own personal bowling skills. Yes, he is the President of a world power but he's still human. Yes, he should be more careful next time but he apologized for his comment after realizing it might have been taken the wrong way and when you speak almost everyday you're bound to let a few words slip. He made a mistake but he apologized for it, so for me it seems everything should be fine.

I would just add it to the list of things ex president Bush messed up on. (INTERNETS??ohmygod.gif

However i do think it was just an accident- think before you speak issue.  But I think president Obama went a little overboard in apologizing- a phone call saying he didn't mean to offend those who participate would just be enough.  The rest of what he said just seem to kiss-up-ish.

I agree with monica. A simple apology would have been enough, but he is, after all, our President. People all over the world and reporteres are going to twist and mutilate everything Obama says so i think the "kissing-up" was necessary..
