Gambling on Gambling?

Is it a good idea for states to legalize gambling, as is currently being proposed in Delaware?  Why or why not?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3968082

"The economic crisis is only making elected officials more aware of how much the government can make by betting on gambling revenue. A recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers reported that the United States stands to earn $52 billion over the next decade by taxing, rather than policing, Internet gaming sites, mainly those focused on poker. That news prompted Congressman Barney Frank (D, Mass.) to announce that, later this month, he'll propose a bill overturning the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act of 2006, which bars banks and credit card companies from making payments to known online gambling sites. The law has made it difficult for many betting sites to do business in the U.S."

" 'Our policy on this issue has been consistent for decades.' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the magazine in an e-mail. 'We have been an active proponent of federal and state legislation that prohibits the spread of legal sports gambling. We do not want our games used as bait.' "

no because the threat of cheating increases.  Shaving points, tanking games, do you want to risk the integrity of our sports?  a la 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal.

Star players tanking games in the World Series. you can't have that.

And in Italian soccer league, Serie A in 2006 had a 6 team match fixing scandal. They were getting paid to throw games and hiring refeerees who would favor the teams they wanted to win while owners and others were getting a nice sum of money from gambling.

Quite frankly though, I don't see the problem with online gambling.  In fact basketball/football (soccer) clubs are even sponsored by gambling sites like BWIN only in Europe of course.  Sure Las Vegas makes bank  every time a major sporting event like the World Cup, NCAA College Basketball Tournament, Super Bowl, etc. However I don't believe gambling should be statewide across the nation. Wouldn't these gambling sites have an incentive to leave the market if gambling becomes legal? Although aAfter reading the ESPN article, it does seem unfair that 4 states basically have a monopoly on sports betting as the other states do not have it legalized.

If gambling becomes legal, are professional athletes allowed to place bets? like Pete Rose? If not, can't their good friends place bets on them and pay them to tank? From a sports fan's point of view, potentially damaging the integrity of the game isn't worth it.  From an economist's view, I'm sure they'd support it.

i think its a good idea. cheating is going to occurr regardless if whether or not gambling is legalized. with gambling made legal it will raise tons of revenue for our country
