Helping teenage parents in Europe.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/joepublic/2009/feb/18/teenage-parents

Alfie Patten, the 13-year-old father, has drawn attention again to Britain's teenage pregnancy rate, the highest in Europe. Amid the handwringing about lack of sex education and the sexual behaviour of teenagers, no one seems to know how to support these young parents now that the baby is born.

Unlike Alfie's case, young fathers are usually older than the mothers. If a young mother stays with her parents or lives with the father and he has a job, she doesn't get much financial or other support. There's not much incentive to stand on your own two feet, do the best for your child, and keep the family together, because you get no help if you do.

In Mexico, Brazil and now in New York City, instead of giving the most cash to those who are the most dependent on the state, the people who do the most for themselves and their children receive the most money.

Could a similar approach work in the UK?

I think this could work. Sadly, money is the biggest motivation and ambition of many people. So maybe if they recieved money for raising their kids right, they would do a better job. It's sad that they have to do that though. People should be good parents without having to be bribed or rewarded. The rewards are things like NOT becoming a grandparent when your son is only 13!

I like that this rule could work! i like it alot and think that this is how people should EARN money. I am really not in big favor of "hand outs"

I think that this could work because the US is drawn by money and that is what makes some people happy. I think that it could work on the "hand out" problem.

I think that could really work for young parents! If they recieve the most support for raising their kids right, they might do their best to raise their child.

But the only problem is it might increase the teen pregnancy rate. Think about it, what if kids start to think it's ok because they're gonna get rewarded for being parents anyways? What if it's no longer a big deal to people? What if they think it's ok to have a child young, and as long as you do your best to raise the kids it's no big deal? It's sad, I think Britain and other countries should try to combat teen pregnancy by having more sex education programs in more schools and stress the importance of abstinence or protection.

i generally like this idea, but lets make sure that its just enough to support themselves and their kids to garuntee a decent life. Otherwise people might keep getting pregnant for moneyy

i think this could work but find it completely pathetic that people have to be bribed into taking care of their kids and that they dont want to go out and do all they can to give their kids the world!!!!!! this really angers me!!!
