Alleged polygamists arrested in Canada _-=%{[(/\/\0oS3/\/\1sT)]}%=-_

Two leaders of a Canadian polygamist sect were arrested Wednesday and charged with polygamy in what could be a landmark case

one had 19 wives, the other had 5

The men are members of the polygamist sect known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or FLDS, and a charter that was enacted in 1982 guarantees freedom of religion and has been used twice to get polygamy charges thrown out.

Do you think religions that involve polygamy should be allowed?
Should religion even be regulated by government at all?

Let them have their wives, why should I care? And no, the government should regulate religion.

technically religions that involve polygamy should be allowed,
because of the freedom of religion. you can not just pick and
choose which religions you want to be allowed because then
it really wouldn't be freedom of religion.

on a personal standpoint..i think that having 19 wives is
wrong and i do not agree with it. take the polygamist sect
in texas for example, those people had tons of kids and
married their daughters off at 13 or 14. that to me is sick.
it is wrong for a 55 year old man to have more than one wife
and not to mention that the majority of them could be his
daughter.

i do believe polygamy should be allowed in religion even though its against my beliefs. Government cannot step into religion its just wrong and causes other issues. I do however believe that there should be some watch on the groups that this occurs in to make sure every person is being legally treated and no molestation or rape cases occur

I dont necessarily agree with the regulation of religion

i believe in the regulation of practice of religion
you can believe whatever you want
you can worship any God you choose
but if you have to burn down a church or have 19 wives in order to practice your religion
i think thats where regulation comes in

You're allowed to believe in polygamy all you want. But that doesn't mean you won't get in trouble for it. You have the right to believe in the practice, you don't necessarily have the right to practice it.

Question: I'm just curious for all you kids out there...
polygamy is okay but homosexual marriage isn't? Whatever. Just seems glitchy to me.

...this gets tricky.
So if this were in America where we do have freedom of religion, but our laws also don't alow Polygamy where would we draw the line? If there was a religion that believed anyone with blonde hair deserved to be murdered they would NOT be allowed to pracitce there beliefs. So maybe when the religion goes againsts most of society's beliefs it should be stop, and in this case it does seem to be against most of society's beliefs so.....

i agree with Chris. when the practice of a religion interferes with the rights of other people, that's when governement regulation needs to step in.

i think these polygamists should definitely be prosecuted. oftentimes the women polygamists marry are brainwashed into believing what the "religion" (*cough* cult) wants them to believe. and as in, texas, the children are forced into this life with no say of their own and no way of getting out and the girls are married off to extremely older men at a terribly young ages. when a religion interferes with other freedoms, it should not be allowed.

I agree with becca. They do have the right to believe in anything they want but when they start brainwashing and "marrying" off 13 and 14 year old girls that is when they should be prosecuted.
there cannot be elements to religion that are against the law.

This is Canada, not America.
Although you have a valid point.

i read this article last week on yahoo and it said that british columbia or canada as a whole had anti polygamy laws or something like that and that most experts beleived like you stated in the post that it may violate the freedom of religion but the british columbia attorny something i dont remember said that it protects women from sexual exploitation so yeah i personally believe that polygamy is wrong even if it is in a religion and i think religion should be regulated by the government only when it violates peoples born rights like in this case they might be forcing younger girls to be with older men.

government should only step-in in cases of illegalities, polygamy isnt the problem necessarily its taking advantage of that.

I watched I thing on Oprah on this
Some who are in the religon don't even want to leave
But they're are a lot who do and are forced to stay
Husbands choose wives
Some girls loose their virginity at like age 12
I think that everyone should have the option to be like this if they choose....
But however, most are born into and the brained washed to think this the right way and that there is no other option
I can't really think of anything that could help this sitatuation because you have to keep freedom of religon but also what's right and wrong

Personally, I think that it's wrong and some religons should be out lawed
or eventually people are going to be like " I murdered my wife because it's my religon"

PLEASE Do not confuse the FLDS with the LDS church.

The Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints split off from the LDS church years ago on the issue of polygomy.

Yes Mormon's WERE known for polygamy, but that was over a century ago.

The FLDS Church is just wrong.

although there should freedom of religion, I think it should be regulated by the same laws that regulate us all in order to keep a functioning society.
