Closing Guantanamo Bay (Kodies)

President elect Barack Obama plans on reviewing inmates and conditions in Guantanamo Bay as a first step towards the closure of the detention facility.

Obama plans to issue an executive order to close the detention facilitity which holds 250 inmates who are claimed by the Bush administration to be "the worst of the worst" who would attack the US if given the opportunity to do so.

Among the 250 inmates are terroist trainers, bomb makers, potential suicide bombers, terrorist financiers and recruiters.  As POWs (Prisoners of War) these individuals are detained without due process of law, one of the basic human rights outlined in the constitution.

Does one's human rights outweigh the risk of National Security?
Is it hypocritical of the US to sponsor a place such as Gitmo, yet claim to be the beacon of freedom and equality?
Should Obama close Guantanamo Bay?

well..Guantanamo Bay becomes the sign of maltreating prisoners. To protect the troops' reputation, he should close it.

oh no, he shouldn't close it down.. these people are just going to go do what they did to get there in the first place, and there won't be a place to put them.. i don't think.

i am very on the fence with this, i see the pros and cons of both closing and keeping it open. While having it open we may be able to get vital information from the captive people inside who may have ties to some of the most notorious terrorism groups in the world, this comes at the expense of some malpractices and yes torture, but again the question of do the ends justify the means??? If we close it we are losing these key people with that information, but protecting the names of our military. The real question to be asked is where does war combat end and legallity start? while its ok for a soldier to fire upon another soldier in combat, but its not ok to do what it takes to get vital info from POW's. ??

Aside from GITMO, where is the line drawn in war, can the ends justify the means?

i don't think it is the best idea to close it because we don't just put any average criminal in this prison. it is reserved for suspected terrorists. how many people would die if they had even a chance of being released? i think national security represents the safety of the who nation, and it outweighs the rights of a few POWs.

obviously everyone does, but its like the whole way our government works, sometimes a few have to lose that right, to protect the right of everyone else. Im not saying that the ongoings in GITMO are good or anything to that point, but the people in this camp are there for a reason. And the means being used are not good, but if it saves thousands of lives this could prove a costly loss, i really dont know how this situation should be handled though. Good luck Barack ha

im not into the whole torture them and treat them like an animal thing. these guys have the right to have the whole court shebang. i mean, no matter how "bad" they are they're still humans. im also a firm believe on the a clockwork orange stance, no one is completely bad while no one is completely good. they deserve to be heard. i dont know if i agree with him shutting it down completely but i do agree with him reviewing the inmates.

oh, barry.

Torture is proven to not produce reliable information bro.

Also the first sentence says President elect Barack Obama plans on reviewing inmates and conditions in Guantanamo Bay as a first step towards the closure of the detention facility.

Where does it say he's going to instantly shut it down and release everyone? He's just going to review the inmates/conditions.

Edit: yeah it's a really tough decision Kody, good luck Obama  batman.gif

how about we bring the terrorist to court, find them guilty, then throw them back in. Therefore the U.S. wouldn't be violating the constitution.

GITMO should be closed. As the "leader of the free world", the beacon of human rights", blah blah blah, we should not be torturing these people and holding them without evidence. I do not believe every prisoner in there is a bad person. I am totally willing to go out on a limb and say there have been some shady things happening by those in control of Gitmo.

your right its not always proven and im not supporting it, but there is obviously a reason why that place has been kept open for as long as it has.

and Obama wants to shut it down, he is reviewing the inmates to check the severity of which he is dealing with. In an interview on ABC's "This Week" last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.

"But I don't want to be ambiguous about this," he said. "We are going to close Guantanamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our constitution."
he will eventually close the facility....

There is a difference in detaining possible threats and torturing possible threats. The bigger issue here is to just stop the torture. We aren't getting any useful information from torturing these prisoners. So why continue? Just detain them.

i think that would be a very viable solution to the issues, but closing the camp as a whole is not

Obama will do whats right i doubt he'd let them go free if he thought we'd get attacked or something and
TORTURE no.
nonononononNO
the thought of that happening makes me sick! We pride ourselves as the United States of America and we should not lower ourselves to that. ESPECIALLY if its not even an effective form of getting information these people are trained to not even think about that ya know? like they would kill themselves for the cause.
