On the United States dollar it says "in god we trust" When we go to court we swear on the holy bible During the pledge of allagience we say "one nation under god"
However, we claim to have seperation of church and state This could be because we were founded on Christianity
But, is it right? Should anything be done to change it so we could have more freedom of religion? Or does it not even matter?
i say we keep things the way they are...the framing fathers have done pretty well so far, as far as the way this country has been built...so i think that everyone should drop the whole thing, because its not worth changing
The pledge was written by a flag company...I feel that it really is not important in this debate. We were not founded on Christianity, the founding fathers were deist. I think that these customs are traditions that there is nothing to feud over. I absolutely think that any religious belief, christianity, muslim, atheist, or otherwise, should have nothing to do with any decisions made by government. Thats separation of church and state.
If you don't like it, change it to fit your style. Omit "under God" if you don't like it. Place your hand on Oprah's book of the month. We shouldn't force people to do things they don't support, but we also shouldn't have to change what has stood forever because 5% of the population doesn't like it. Protect the majority's wants, but be flexible for others.
i agree with becca i believe these actions are more for tradition rather then the actual fact that it is chrisitianity, and considering the majority of American's are christianity. However i also believe that if a person'a personal belief clashes with that of the christian values that most American's hold they should be able to suit it to their personal beliefs. I don't believe we should change these traditional values though especially when all religions preech the same ideas such as, love thy neighbor and so on... so do what you believe is right, but i don't think its worth changing tradtition over.
i believe that seperation of church and state is crucial in any society and i think we do a bad job of not following through on this. i think that if a president swears in and doesn't say "amen" etc. and that people looking down on him for not being a religious man is a horrible thing. religion is personal, and no one else should be involved. i think the abortion laws also are largely decided based upon religious views, which i am against. i have respect for every religion, i think they all are magnificent. i have my own, you have yours and if i choose to say "under god" when reciting the pledge of alligence is my thing. i personally think it should be omitted, because not everyone believes in what we call god.
enough babbling. no, we were not funded on christianity although it seems very much like it. and no, i don't think we should even mention god and any form of government in the same sentence.
hmmm well why fix somehting that isnt broken no one forces you to do anything lie in court dont say the plege dont live in the US if you dont like the money
the freedom of action and choice is what really makes this country amazing not the little things like whats on our currency

i know some people have a big problem with all that but they should just let it go. its not a big deal. i thought the court kind of forces you to swear on the bible though.. i think that should be changed

Lying in court and not saying the pledge are two very different things! One is a crime called perjury and the other is a personal decision. Also this country wasn't founded on "Love it or leave it" if the founding fathers had that attitude we would still be under British rule!
I believe that everything is fine the way it is and that nothing needs to be changed. I believe that it's gone good long enough that it would just be pointless and a waste of time to change, it's and American tradition and no one is forced to say the pledge of allegiance.
if we dont say the pledge, then what should we say? should we sing "nifty-fifty united states"(Statement courtesy of Bob Thomas)? or would someone have a problem with that? quit whining, theres other way more important things that need attention!!!!!
It really doesn't matter that much what the quarter says. To me it seems it is more of a tradition than actually a political statement about one national religion.
People take separation of Church and State WAY TOO FAR. Seriously, all it was meant for was to guarantee that no religion would be forced upon someone else, or that someone had to be a member of a particular religious group in order to vote. Essentially, freedom of religion without the state imposing it on others. Like those who want the phrase "under God" taken out of the pledge of allegiance are stupid. It is not imposing religion by making it law or anything.
