The Untouchables, or the Dalit (pronounced: "delete"), are the lowest class of people in India. This class of people are treated less than animals and granted only the most menial of jobs. Even when a region of India was disastrously flooded only the higher caste and the wealthy were rescued even though the majority were Dalits. Can anything be done to help these oppressed people?
the caste system has existed in India for hundreds of years, and i think that if change is going to come, its going to be a very slow process, rome wasnt built in a day you hav to understand, and also, wat are the people that hav lived as Dalits going to do if they are given their freedom? look at slaves after emancipation, they would be out of jobs, out of food, and their life would lose its purpose, time is the only solution, with a small mix of change dashed into the mix
The fact of the matter is that India is one of the most poverty stricken countries in the world, more importantly this fact is due to their social system of classes and their culture
My point is is that this is the way things are in India, as horrible as things may be, it would take a tremendous amount of time and money to reform an entire country's worth of dying people

Once again, I agree with Scott. There isn't an immediate solution to helping the Dalits. I am a strong advocate for humanitarian work, Peace Corps and such. However, thats not going to make a change. It will be a long laboring process. As far as "getting a job or moving" thats not possible in a caste system, they are completely ostracized for being an untouchable.
i would agree with scotts statement i believe change will come, but slowly. if it were to happen all of a sudden, he is right people wouldnt know what to do with their freedom.
There will probably never be a time in India where all Dalit's will be rescued. This caste system has been in use for thousands of years, and the wealthier population of India are not ready to give it up. Although these organizations dont make internatiol headlines, there are Dalit relief groups in India. For example, I go to a church where a large profit of income is being sent over to India to sponsor children who grow up in Dalit families. They also fund the building of schools (Dalit Education Centers)
I believe as well that change will come but with time. This is also part of their culture, they will change when they feel like it or when some of the Dalit stand up for themselves and decide it is time for change.
I somewhat agree however there are some cultures that have remain the same for centuries without change regardless if as Americans we believe their caste system is not right. I don't however believe there is anything we can really do to help them. I believe the people will eventually realize themselves that this system is may not be as effective, with due time and as the world evolves and all nations become more advanced.
i think many things could've been done to save those people but the social status is much more important to the people of India and so they saved the wealthy first because they make more of a contribution to the economy then those of the Datil class. it's wrong but that's they way Injdia wants to run there country.

i think this is just how the social class is, and there isn't much that can be done to change this. something that has been a certain way for so many years in a certain culture isnt going to change anytime soon :-/ it might not be fair, but its just how things are.
i honestly dont think things will ever change. it sucks and its negative but after knowing that all your life and even now, when we as a world have overcome so much, i dont think these sorts of things can be tampered with. or at least not for a long, long time. no one is going to stand up for these guys, and even if they do it's a fat chance anything will happen.
personal beliefs though, i think everyone deserves equality. i just know that it is a very very difficult thing to achieve
Any change would be hard to come about and would have to come from the dalit people themselves. Theres not much we could or even should do, just let them realize its their lives and responsibility.
I don't think anything can be done to help the Delits to be accepted by the wealthy, unless someone lectures to India about how everyone is equal, which would be silly. I don't believe the social classes will change, for right now at least..just like everyone else is saying. I don't know, maybe as time goes on they will if they begin to get better jobs or something and gain more respect from the others and then can get treated fairly. I think that is pretty awful that they were not saved just because they weren't as wealthy, people are people.
