The Island of Kiribati is not a very large island and due to global waming and the melting of the ice caps it is sinking into the Pacific Ocean. The president of Kiribati, Anote Tong, has asked the UN to give them aid in this tragedy, but there is not much they can do since their neighbors Australia and New Zealand are refusing to help.
Should this country be given aid and saved or merely evacuated?
I think they should be evactuated because if the island is sinking there isn't much you can do. The people of Kiribati should just go live on Austrlia or New Zealand.
I think it shound be evacuated. You can't do very much to save the island if it is sinking. Because eventually it will just be gone and you can't stop global warming.
Yes, they should evacuate people form the island, in this case money isn't worth anything, you can't go against the nature. The best aid can be only succesful and well-timed evacuation
I've been to Kiribati, and it's a beautiful island. Very small, but the people are great. However, if the island is sinking like they say it is, what aid can be given to improve the situation? Get them out safely now, so some unanticipated tradegy doesn't physically hurt them.
I completly agree with plans of evacuation. Global Warming just happens to be apart of nature and we all know the best thing to do is get out saftly before real damage can happen to the people.
i think that if we currently possesed sufficient technology that saving the island would be top priority, but i dont think its realistic to say that we do have the technology, so evacuation would just have to be second best
I think the best thing for the people is to just evacuate i understand that they probably don't want to leave their home but they wont be able to stop whats happening so it would just be safer to evacuate.
Evacuate an attempt to repair an island is just outrageous. Dont try and fight nature you'll lose every time. More importantly however the thing they shouldnt do is wait, it'll definetly take time to move (physically and emotionally) such a large amount of people from their homes.

Although I know there is little you can do to stop an island from being swallowed by the sea, I can see how the people of Kiribati would find it hard to simply give up on their home, pack up their lives, and start over. Unfortunately there isnt any other option but to evacuate before it is too late.
Shame on Australia and New Zealand for not providing a helping hand. If my neighbor was sinking into the Pacific Ocean, I would at least ask if I could do anything to help.
The evacuation plan is the way to go. Right now, we obviously aren't trying as hard as we could be to stop global warming. If the island is already sinking, save the people.
